MEC NKOMO-RALEHOKO VISITS SIX-YEAR-OLD PATIENT AT JUBILEE HOSPITAL RECOVERING FROM NORTH WEST LIGHTNING STRIKE

In an act of compassion and empathy, the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko visited a six-year-old patient recovering at Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal on Monday, 5 January 2025. The visit follows an incident in which 46 people from Dertig Village in the North West province were struck by lightning during a community gathering.

Initially, the patients were taken to Mathibestad Clinic and later referred to Jubilee Hospital for further treatment on 03 January. They received care primarily for superficial burns and numbness. Following treatment, 45 patients were discharged the next day, while the remaining six-year-old patient, currently admitted to the paediatric unit, is reported to be in stable condition.

The Department urges those affected by the lightning to rest, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and visit the nearest health facility if they experience symptoms such as confusion or concentrated urine.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko expressed gratitude to the health team, including Emergency Medical Services, for their tireless efforts in providing essential healthcare services.

In addition, the MEC took the MEC’s Desk to Jubilee Hospital, an initiative that introduces a direct consultative platform that allows patients to engage with the MEC during her visits to healthcare facilities. This groundbreaking programme was launched late last year at Leratong Hospital.

The MEC’s Desk provides a real-time communication channel between patients and the MEC, aimed at gathering feedback on service delivery. It also serves as a demonstration of leadership accountability and responsiveness, reinforcing the Department’s commitment to improving patient care.

“Through this initiative, we continue to prioritise quality healthcare, ensuring patient voices lead to meaningful action,” said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko after engaging with patients at Jubilee Hospital.
