The African National Congress (ANC) will celebrate its 114th anniversary on 8 January, marking more than a century since its founding in 1912 as South Africa’s oldest liberation movement.

The main celebrations will take place in the North West Province, where thousands of members and supporters are expected to gather. The highlight of the day will be the January 8 Statement, to be delivered by ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa. This annual address is one of the most important events on the ANC calendar.

Traditionally, the January 8 Statement reflects on the movement’s long history of struggle against colonialism and apartheid, while also setting out the party’s priorities and direction for the year ahead. It speaks to issues affecting ordinary South Africans, including jobs, the economy, service delivery, unity, and good governance.

This year’s anniversary comes at a time of serious reflection for the ANC. The party faces growing public pressure to improve performance in government, strengthen internal unity, and rebuild trust with communities. Political analysts see the anniversary as a key moment for the ANC to reaffirm its values, renew its leadership culture, and reconnect with the people.

The ANC leadership has described the 114th anniversary as a call for discipline, renewal, and collective responsibility. Supporters are urged to honour the legacy of the organisation’s founders by working together to address today’s challenges.
As the ANC turns 114, the message remains clear: reflect on the past, confront the present, and shape a better future for South Africa.
