By THABO MOTLHABI

Local artists, businesses and community members came together in Soweto to celebrate creativity and showcase homegrown talent at the Isithebe Residency Exhibition hosted by Funda Community College in Diepkloof Zone 6 on Saturday, 17 October 2026.

More than 40 emerging and established creatives displayed their work, shared their stories and connected with potential buyers and other stakeholders, highlighting the role communities can play in creating opportunities for local artists.

Mzimkulu “Mzie” Gojo, an artist and assistant campus manager at Funda Community College, said the initiative aimed to empower creatives and create opportunities for growth.

Rector and Executive Director Dr Tshepo Mvulane Moloi highlighted the importance of providing young artists with safe spaces to develop their talents and gain exposure.

“Funda is giving emerging artists, who are under 35 years old, that safe space to grow their artworks and profiles,” he said.

The exhibition was built on three pillars: discovery, empowerment and community. It also highlighted challenges facing emerging creatives, including limited mentorship, networking opportunities and difficulties marketing their work.

Gojo encouraged artists to remain disciplined and embrace their creativity.

“They’re very special people on earth because they chose to be creative and, by doing so, they will preserve history for the coming generations,” he said.

Artist Belinda Tlhaka welcomed the initiative, describing it as a growing platform for local talent. She encouraged residents to spread the word about Funda Community College and its programmes.

Visitors viewed the paintings, enquired about prices and engaged directly with the artists.

The exhibition demonstrated how bringing communities and creatives together can help local talent gain recognition, build connections and explore opportunities within the creative industry.
