A deep sense of sorrow hangs over the Vaal following a tragic road crash that claimed the lives of 14 schoolchildren. The accident happened on the R553 Golden Highway near Vanderbijlpark when a scholar transport vehicle collided head-on with a truck.

The young learners were on their way to school when the crash occurred. Some died at the scene, while others passed away later in hospital. Families, schools, and the wider community have been left broken by the sudden and painful loss of so many young lives.

The driver of the scholar transport has now appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court. Prosecutors have upgraded the charges against him to 14 counts of murder, one for each learner who died. He also faces three counts of attempted murder for learners who survived with serious injuries, as well as traffic-related offences, including driving without a valid professional permit.

During the court appearance, the driver chose to abandon his bail application and remains in custody. The matter has been postponed to a later date as investigations continue and the state prepares its case.
Emotional scenes unfolded outside court as grieving parents and relatives gathered, seeking answers and justice for their children. Many held back tears as they listened to the proceedings, their pain visible and shared by the nation.

As South Africa mourns, this tragedy has renewed calls for stronger road safety measures and stricter monitoring of scholar transport services. Above all, the country stands in mourning, remembering the innocent lives lost too soon and holding their families close in this time of unbearable grief.
