Parents and guardians whose children will be starting Grade 1 or Grade 8 in 2027 are encouraged to apply through the Gauteng Department of Education’s online admissions system.
The application period will run from 5 August to 4 September this year and no extensions will be granted after the closing date. Parents are urged to prepare all the required supporting documents and submit their applications well before the deadline.
Learners who are currently in Grade 7 and will be entering Grade 8 next year are also required to apply during this admissions period.
Gauteng MEC for Education, sport, arts, culture and recreation, Lebohang Maile, officially announced the opening and closing dates for the 2027 online admissions process at the media briefing held in Joburg on Monday. The Gauteng Department of Education has urged parents not to delay their applications, warning that submitting late could reduce the chances of securing placement at their preferred schools.
Maile said every school application submitted by parents helps not only the department to determine how many learners will need to be accommodated in the following academic year.
But that information enables them as department to plan well, including the deployment of teachers, the provision of desks and chairs, the distribution of learning and teaching materials, and the construction or allocation of additional classrooms where needed.
“Parents and legal guardians should familiarise themselves with the application process gather all the required supporting documents, verify the accuracy of their personal information and identify suitable schools before beginning the online application,” said the MEC.
He encouraged parents to choose about five schools of their choice closest to where they live to ensure that children don’t have to travel long distances to and from school every day.
Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) online admissions system, need the following certified documents:
Parent or guardian’s South African ID or valid passport.
Learner’s birth certificate or valid passport.
Proof of home address (such as a municipal account, lease agreement, or affidavit where applicable).
Proof of work address (if you are applying using your workplace address).
Latest school report (Grade 8 applicants only).
Clinic card or immunisation record (Grade 1 applicants only).
For non-South African citizens: a valid study permit, asylum seeker/refugee permit, permanent or temporary residence permit, or proof that an application has been made with the Department of Home Affairs.
