Panyaza Lesufi delivered the 2026 State of the Province Address (SOPA) during the Official Opening of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, setting out government priorities while acknowledging the presence of dignitaries, community leaders, business representatives and residents.

Guests from across society were welcomed to the legislature, reflecting the importance of SOPA as a platform that brings together government, civil society and the private sector to shape Gauteng’s future. The address outlined the provincial government’s commitment to improving service delivery, strengthening infrastructure, boosting economic growth and enhancing community safety.

Lesufi emphasised the need for partnerships to tackle unemployment, energy challenges and infrastructure backlogs, noting that cooperation between government, business and communities remains critical to progress.

Opposition parties, while recognising the significance of the occasion, raised concerns about persistent challenges facing residents. Key criticisms focused on crime levels, unemployment, service delivery delays, infrastructure maintenance and the pace of economic recovery.

Opposition leaders called for stronger accountability, measurable targets and improved implementation of government programmes.

Despite political differences, the legislature session reflected democratic engagement, with robust debate seen as essential to strengthening governance and ensuring that public resources are used effectively.

The SOPA sets the tone for the provincial legislative programme and policy direction for the year ahead. As Gauteng navigates economic pressures and social challenges, the coming months will test how effectively announced plans translate into tangible improvements in the daily lives of residents.
