eThekwini Kota Festival Returns to Durban with Bigger Ambitions and Strong Community Impact

Durban will once again play host to the popular eThekwini Kota Festival, which returns to People’s Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 6 June this year, with organisers promising a bigger event focused on food, youth empowerment and local business support.

The festival, known for celebrating township kota culture, has grown steadily in recent years and is expected to attract a larger crowd than last year’s event. Organisers say the increase reflects a rising interest in kota as both a cultural and culinary experience, drawing residents, young people and food lovers from across Durban.

Beyond the food, the event is expected to create job opportunities for young people in surrounding communities. Temporary roles in areas such as event operations, hospitality and creative industries will form part of the festival’s contribution to local employment.

Students are also set to benefit, with opportunities to gain practical experience in marketing, media, event coordination and customer service. Organisers say this exposure is aimed at helping students develop skills and better prepare for careers in the events and media industries. The number of food vendors has been increased, allowing more small, locally owned businesses to showcase their products.

The festival serves as an important platform for these entrepreneurs, offering them exposure to new customers and opportunities to grow their brands. Partnerships with companies such as Capitec and Albany are also expected to support emerging entrepreneurs through business development initiatives, including guidance on financial management and customer service.

Tickets are currently available, with organisers encouraging the public to secure their spots early as demand continues to grow. Organisers say the eThekwini Kota Festival is more than just a food event, describing it as a space that brings communities together while supporting young people and small businesses in Durban.
