The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has urged women to speak up and not suffer in silence if they are being abused.
Mchunu told Ezimtoti News at the Richmond Magistrate Court where a man has made his first appearance after he attacked his girlfriend who’s currently fighting for her life in hospital with a screwdriver.
Bongiwe Nxele from Shayamoya in Richmond lost her sight after she was allegedly attacked and stabbed multiple times in the eyes by a man she called her boyfriend.
The 36-year old man has since been arrested and the angry members of the community protested outside the Richmond Magistrate Court, demanding that the suspect not be granted bail.
The suspect forcefully wanted to take her with him, and when Bongiwe refuses to go with him, he started attacking her, along with Bongiwe’s grandmother.
Minister Mchunu strongly condemned man’s actions as barbaric.
“What the suspect did to this woman is horrifying,” said the minister.
He said Nxele will never be able to see properly again, as one of her eyes will never regain sight.”
He then urged communities to continue fighting against the scourge of violence directed at women and children.
