South Africa’s infrastructure future took centre stage as the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) convened a high-level two-day symposium in Sandton under the theme: “Engineering for Sustainable Development: Empowering Innovation, Inclusion and Impact.”
This strategic forum brought together government leaders, industry experts, academia, and emerging professionals to confront critical infrastructure challenges and accelerate delivery solutions. Opening the symposium, Dada Morero (Executive Mayor of Johannesburg) emphasised the urgency of restoring infrastructure capacity, calling for stronger collaboration between municipalities and engineers to rebuild service delivery systems and drive inclusive urban development.
Deliberations focused on key priorities including climate-resilient infrastructure, water security, energy transition, and digital transformation, while also addressing governance, ethics, and professional accountability. These engagements aligned with national objectives to strengthen service delivery, enhance economic growth, and build sustainable communities.
Delivering a keynote, Sihle Zikalala (Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure) underscored that this was “a call for decisive action, innovation and leadership,” urging engineers to take a more active role in decision-making to unlock stalled infrastructure projects and improve delivery performance.
On the second day, Pemmy Majodina (Minister of Water and Sanitation) reinforced the critical role of engineering solutions in addressing water security and ensuring sustainable resource management.
ECSA’s regulatory mandate ensured professional standards and public protection, while SAICE’s technical leadership advanced innovation and practical excellence. Together, they positioned the engineering sector as a driver of inclusive growth and infrastructure reliability.
As South Africa navigated complex socio-economic demands, this initiative signalled a unified commitment to sustainable development, skills advancement, and collaborative governance, ensuring that engineering solutions delivered measurable impact for communities and future generations.
