ROADS AFFECTED BY THE ANC NATIONAL MARCH IN THE JOHANNESBURG CBD


The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) wishes to advise motorists and the public of a
planned march by the African National Congress (ANC) scheduled for Saturday, 21 March 2026. An
estimated 50,000 participants are expected to attend, which will significantly impact on traffic flow in the
Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas.
Event Schedule

  • Gathering Time: 07h00 at designated assembly points (Mary Fitzgerald Square and Beyers Naude
    Square)
  • March Commencement: 12h00.
  • Expected Conclusion: 15h00 at Constitutional Hill.
    Affected Routes & Street Closures
    Participants will depart simultaneously from two key locations and proceed toward Constitutional Hill.
    Motorists are urged to avoid the following routes:
    Route 1: From Mary Fitzgerald Square
  • Lilian Ngoyi Street
  • Pixley Ka Seme Street (turning left)
  • Queen Elizabeth Bridge
  • Bertha Street
  • Jorrissen Street (turning right)
  • Civic Boulevard
  • Hoofd Street (turning right)
  • Kotze Street (turning left)
  • Hospital Street (leading to Constitutional Hill)
    Route 2: From Beyers Naude Square
  • Helen Joseph Street
  • Pixley Ka Seme Street (turning right)
  • Queen Elizabeth Bridge
  • Bertha Street
  • Jorrissen Street

Civic Boulevard

  • Hoofd Street
  • Kotze Street
  • Hospital Street (leading to Constitutional Hill)
    Traffic Management & Safety
    JMPD officers will be deployed at all affected intersections to regulate traffic and conduct point duty.
    While the march is expected to be peaceful, the following impacts are anticipated:
  • Heavy Traffic Congestion: Significant delays are expected on all routes leading into the CBD.
  • Business Disruptions: Daily business routines in the immediate vicinity of the march may be affected.
  • Public Transport: Commuters should expect delays or diversions for buses and taxis operating in these
    areas.
    Advice to Motorists
  • Avoid the CBD: Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes and avoid the inner city
    between 07h00 and 16h00.
  • Plan Ahead: If you must travel through the area, please allow for extra travel time.
  • Follow Instructions: Obey all instructions given by JMPD officers on the ground.
