THE Bridgestone South Africa is going to Madibeng Local Municipality schools to shower pupils with FREE drivers licences.

Chantel Baxter, corporate and social investment manager at Bridgestone, said they are targeting pupils who are doing well academically.

“Everything is completely funded,” said Baxter.

“So this is the first year that we’re doing it. We are piloting it at the moment. We want to see how it works.”

Her dream is to make this initiative big so that it can happen again next year. “We don’t want to end at 62. We want a lot more in other provinces,” added the manager.

About 62 grade 11 & 12 pupils from five secondary schools in the North West province are going to be issued with drivers licences before the end of the year.

But before that can happen, pupils will have to go through learner’s licence theory training, road safety education and practical driving lessons.

She said the Project Turnkey, which was launched on Friday 20 March, in partnership with the Wheel Well organisation, will take nine months to complete.

Wheel Well is the non-governmental organisation that will teach these pupils about road safety and its rules and regulations.

The other four schools were Thaba Morula Secondary School, Eletsa Secondary School, Michael Modisakeng Secondary School and Mothotlung Secondary School.
