Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, today visited Meadowlands in Soweto to support a community clean-up and health awareness campaign aimed at promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
The initiative brings together the Gauteng Department of Health, environmental health practitioners, waste pickers, community leaders and residents in a shared effort to clean public spaces and strengthen hygiene awareness.
The campaign focuses on improving waste management practices, encouraging proper hand hygiene and highlighting the health risks linked to poor sanitation. By working side-by-side, residents and officials are helping to prevent disease while restoring pride in their neighbourhood.
During the visit, health teams engaged with waste pickers and community members, sharing practical guidance on safe waste handling and environmental health practices.
The MEC’s participation reflects the province’s commitment to building healthier communities through partnership, education and active citizen involvement.
The clean-up showcased the power of unity, demonstrating that when communities and government work together, cleaner streets and healthier lives are within reach
