THE MEC FOR SPORT, ARTS, CULTURE AND RECREATION LEBOGANG MAILE CONGRATULATES MAMELODI SUNDOWNS ON THEIR HARD-FOUGHT PASSAGE TO THE 2ND LEG OF THE CONFEDERATION OF AFRICAN FOOTBALL (CAF) CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.

MEC Maile congratulates Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club “Bafana Ba Style” following their triumphant victory on the first leg of the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League against Espérance Sportive de Tunis.

“Masandawana” defeated Espérance Sportive de Tunis 1-0 on Sunday at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi. According to MEC Maile, this victory is not merely a sporting milestone; it reflects the transformative power of sport as a strategic instrument for social cohesion and nation-building.

Mamelodi Sundowns continues to demonstrate that football has the capacity to transcend historical divides, unite communities, and affirm our shared identity as a diverse yet cohesive society. MEC Maile reiterates that sport remains a critical pillar in fostering unity in diversity, particularly in a province and country as rich in cultural plurality as ours.

The achievements of Mamelodi Sundowns inspire a collective national consciousness, galvanising South Africans across all walks of life to rally behind a common cause. MEC Maile maintains that Gauteng is the uncontested “Home of Champions” and the quality of football that is displayed by teams that are formed in Gauteng Townships confirms this assertion.

“As government, we recognise sport not only as recreation, but as a deliberate tool to advance social integration, restore human dignity, and build a united society. The success of Sundowns on the continental stage reinforces this vision,” said MEC Maile.

As the team prepares for the second leg, the MEC calls on all South Africans to stand united in support of Mamelodi Sundowns as they carry the aspirations of the nation and the region.

MEC Maile is confident that “Bafana Ba Style” will continue their winning streak as they head to the second leg of the semi-final against ES Tunis. The match, which will take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane on 18 April 2026, promises to be a spectacle of flair and great football, and South Africans will be collectively united in their support of Masandawana.
