Mamelodi Sundowns boosted their title challenge with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership showdown at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

The match started at a high tempo, with both sides pressing and looking dangerous in attack. Sundowns struck first in the 36th minute when forward Brayan Léon found space inside the box and finished calmly past the Pirates goalkeeper.

Just four minutes later, Sundowns doubled their lead. Léon reacted quickest to a loose ball in the area and slotted home his second goal, giving the visitors a strong advantage heading into halftime.

Pirates responded immediately after the break. Midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi pulled one back in the 46th minute with a composed finish that reignited the home crowd and shifted momentum in favour of the Buccaneers.

The remainder of the match was fiercely contested. Pirates pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while Sundowns stayed compact and dangerous on the counterattack. Despite late pressure from the hosts, the visitors held firm to secure all three points.

The victory tightens the race at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, with Sundowns closing the gap on Pirates and keeping the title fight wide open.

Both teams now turn their focus to upcoming fixtures as the season continues to build toward an exciting finish.
