IT was a clean sweep for the senior South African Wheelchair Basketball teams on the opening day of the 2026 IWBF 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Commonwealth Games Qualifiers hosted at the state-of-the-art PavilhãoMultiusos do Kilambain the Angolan capital.
The South African senior men’s team, affectionately known as the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys were the first to take to the court on the opening day when they tipped off against The Gambia who proved to be of no match for the highly experienced South Africans who comfortably wrapped up the tie 21-1.
The team followed up this impressive result with a comfortable win over Kenya, 19-8 before wrapping up the day with a hard-fought win against a tenacious Nigeria side, 10-5 to finish the day as the only unbeaten team in the qualifiers ahead of the playoffs.
The senior women’s team, the Sasol AmaWheelaGirls were not to be outdone and put in an impressive set of results which saw them finish the day unbeaten as well.
The first game was a tense, low scoring affair against Nigeria which saw them triumph 5-2 before upping the ante against Kenya and sealing a 9-2 victory.
Both teams will be favourites going into the playoffs on Friday where only one men’s team and one women’s team from Africa will qualify for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
