Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, has made the decision to temporarily close the Robinson landfill following the outbreak of a fire at the site.
This precautionary measure underscores our commitment to prioritising the safety of our personnel, customers, service providers, and surrounding residents, as well as the protection of our plant and equipment.
The temporary closure is to ensure a safe and controlled environment for firefighting efforts without the interference of waste disposal trucks from both Pikitup and private sector companies. This strategic decision will help in ensuring that emergency services can operate effectively and efficiently.
The cause of the fire, which started late last night, is currently under investigation and remains undetermined. Pikitup is actively collaborating with the Johannesburg Emergency Services Department, who are present on-site to support and execute firefighting operations. Unfortunately, the windy conditions are posing additional challenges to our efforts to extinguish the fire swiftly.
We want to assure the residents living near the landfill, particularly those in close proximity, that all efforts are being undertaken to bring the situation under control.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the smoke emanating from the site and appreciate the understanding and patience of the community during this time.
We will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves and our teams are working diligently to resolve this situation.
