Nelson Mandela University and Coega Pave the Way for Future Doctors and Engineers

Representatives from the Nelson Mandela University Gqeberha Campus visited Coega’s Maths and Science Programme learners at the Coega Human Capital Solutions building at the Coega Special Economic Zone.

Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa24 June 2025 – The Coega Development Corporation (Coega), yesterday, proudy hosted the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) to present a comprehensive workshop with the Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP) Class of 2025 at the Skills Development Centre, in Zone 4 of the Coega Special Economic Zone.  The annual workshop, now in its second year, aims to foster holistic learner development and guide prospective university students through the rigourous university application process, providing crucial  information on bursaries and funding.

The Coega MSP is a catalytic Corporate Social Investment initiative that empowers matric learners to improve their final results in Mathematics and Physical Science, enabling them to pursue their preferred STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering  and Mathematics) qualifications.

Ms. Joahana Messiah, NMU Manager for Access and Enrollment, explained that NMU’s primary aim was to actively engage with the learners and address any concerns or queries they have regarding entry to university.

“I’ve come here today to speak with the learners. My hope is that the information we’ve shared will equip them to successfully complete their university applications,” said Messiah.

MSP learners, Mpilo Zamxaka and Alizwa Spelmandla, agreed that the session was informative and inspiring.

“I gained so much valuable information today, from understanding university application procedures and requirements to exploring different bursary options. My goal is to pursue Electrical Engineering once I’ve upgraded my math and science results, said Zamxaka.

Spelmandla added: “Today’s visit from NMU was incredibly informative. I got all my questions answered regarding the application process, registration, and NSFAS. I’m planning to pursue a medical degree, with a Bachelor of Pharmacy as my second choice.”

Mr. Eldon September, Coega Maths and Science Programme Facilitator, described the event as a key component in exposing learners to opportunities beyond the classroom.

“We welcomed NMU to share vital information about the university application process. Our learners and parents may lack vital information about life after matric, and so, the importance of the session was to have the admissions office here to answer their pressing questions. They now know everything that they need to know, all they need to do is work towards their goals,” concluded September.

Anchored by strategic partnerships with institutions like NMU, Coega remains committed to championing socio-economic development across local communities through purpose-led training and skills development opportunities.
