The 25th National Teaching Awards lit up the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, celebrating South Africa’s finest educators with pride and gratitude. The ceremony, led by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, recognised teachers whose work continues to inspire and transform classrooms across the country.
Minister Gwarube used the moment to pledge her commitment to easing teachers’ heavy paperwork so they can focus more on what truly matters—teaching and nurturing young minds. She reminded the nation that quality education begins with motivated teachers who feel valued and supported.
Teachers from every province were honoured in various categories, from Physical Sciences and Life Skills to Special Needs Education. The excitement filled the hall as winners received digital devices, educational trips abroad, and even brand-new cars—symbols of appreciation for their tireless efforts.
Among the shining stars was Thulani Sibiya from Mpumalanga, crowned South Africa’s National Best Teacher. Charnelle Arendse from Belmor Primary in the Western Cape received the Minister’s Special Award, while Sonia Kallai from Limpopo’s Grade R classrooms stole hearts by winning a top honour, earning a car, cash prize, and a trip to Denmark.
The night was more than a ceremony—it was a heartfelt reminder that teaching is not just a job, but a calling. Every learner’s dream begins with a teacher’s belief. In Boksburg that night, the nation stood to applaud its true heroes—the ones who shape tomorrow, one lesson at a time.
