Johannesburg, Gauteng leaders came out with confidence today, saying the G20 Summit was not only safely delivered, but also pushed government to raise its game and they plan to keep that same energy moving forward.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi told the media that the province’s rapid clean up, road repairs, streetlight fixes and security upgrades were not “quick cosmetics” for the summit. He said the systems used to prepare for G20 weekly planning meetings, teamwork across departments, and strict deadlines will now continue as part of normal government work. According to him, if the province could fix things fast for G20, it can fix things fast every day.
Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni reported that officers made 13 arrests during the summit period. He said strong police visibility and the use of technology helped catch suspects quickly, sending a clear message that crime around major events will not be tolerated. He added that with more resources, police can maintain that same level of action throughout the province.
MEC Lebogang Maile highlighted the economic benefits, saying the G20 brought a major financial boost to Gauteng. He said businesses, hotels, transport and local suppliers all felt the impact. According to Maile, the summit proved that Gauteng can host large global events while also strengthening its own economy.
Lesufi ended the briefing with a firm promise: the improvements seen during G20 will not disappear now that the event is over. He said government must work with the same urgency every week, because residents deserve that level of service every day.
