The Florida Library was buzzing with excitement as it opened its doors to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. Learners from Royal College and Bright Minds arrived in their neatly pressed uniforms, their eyes wide with curiosity as they were introduced to their local hub of knowledge.
Librarian Ziphozethu Zuka led the activities with enthusiasm, turning every page into an adventure. Her interactive style kept the young audience captivated, bridging the gap between imagination and the written word.
“This programme focuses on promoting reading, literacy and a love for books among children,” Zuka explained. “Seeing the children participate in the read-aloud sessions, interactive digital activities and reading exercises using tablets was truly heartwarming.”
The event also highlighted the future of learning. With tablets in hand, learners explored digital literacy, showing that the library is a space where classic storytelling meets modern technology.
Following the reading sessions, Senior Library Assistant Bongile Ncobela addressed the scholars in the children’s section, teaching them the important art of book care. She emphasised that books are treasures that must be handled with care.
“Books need to be preserved for future generations,” Ncobela told the attentive group. She also shared a practical reminder about hygiene: “Don’t eat and touch a book at the same time. Finish eating, then wash your hands before handling the pages.”
The level of concentration was remarkable, with the learners sitting quietly and focusing intently on the message.
As the activities wrapped up, staff hinted that this was only the beginning. With more digital programmes on the horizon, it promises to be an exciting year for the Florida Library.
