Pikitup, the waste management entity of the City of Johannesburg, wishes to distance itself from the actions of individuals who are allegedly scattering waste in parts of the Randburg area while falsely claiming that Pikitup employees are on strike.
Pikitup would like to categorically state that its employees are not on strike. Workers reported for duty today and have been dispatched to carry out scheduled waste collection services in areas serviced by the Randburg Depot.
Since Tuesday, 03 March 2026, a group of protesting residents, reportedly from Zandspruit, Honeydew, Malatjie, Cosmo City and surrounding informal settlements, have been demonstrating outside the Randburg Depot demanding employment opportunities from Pikitup. During the protests, access to the depot was blocked, preventing employees and waste collection vehicles from leaving the premises to service residents.
Pikitup then enlisted the assistance of the South African Police Service and earlier today, 06 March 2026 the protesting residents were removed from the depot entrances, allowing employees to resume their duties. However, it has been alleged that some protesters subsequently went into nearby areas and began scattering residents’ refuse bins and trashing the streets while falsely claiming to be Pikitup employees and informing residents that workers were on strike.
Pikitup strongly condemns these actions and wishes to assure residents that waste collection services have resumed as scheduled. Pikitup would like to thank the affected residents for their patience and understanding. INFORMATION SUPPLIED
