TOWNSHIP TALENT SHINES THROUGH SPORT

THABO MOTLHABI

THERE’S an abundance of talent in every township in South Africa.

But lack of proper sporting infrastructure and development opportunities often causes many gifted young athletes to go unnoticed, with their potential going to waste.

To help address this challenge EYETHU-YARONA Foundation has partnered with Nomfundo Zondo Foundation, Net99, Debonairs Pizza and Boxer.

As well as Go2iceman, DNH Twins, KG Cricket Foundation and Uthando Lwethu Foundation to organise a Sports Day. The aim was to celebrate June 16 to empower the youth through sport.

The celebrations took place at Thembile Primary School in Kagiso, West Rand.

Today’s kids have many ways to celebrate June 16, and children around West Rand showcased their talent by playing football, cricket and netball.

The initiative not only encouraged participation in sport but also inspired hope, discipline, teamwork, and the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Event organiser, Thokozani Mqina who is also the founder of EYETHU-YARONA Foundation, thanked everyone who made this event a success:

“To all kids who were part of this keep your heads up, and one day we will get to the finish line,” he said.

“If this is our hardships, then we keep striving, and soon we will reap the rewards.”

He said events like these play a vital role in identifying hidden talent and reminding communities that, with the right support and investment, township athletes can achieve greatness on national and international stages.
