SWANEVILLE MARKS ANNUAL MASSACRE COMMEMORATION

THE Civil and Progressive Alliance NPO in West Rand, recently hosted a successful Swaneville Massacre Commemoration.

The commemoration took place on Saturday, 16 May, and it was held at Lusake Community Hall. Swaneville Massacre remains one of the major political attacks that occurred in the West Rand during the violence of the early 1990s.

During the tragic incident in 1991, 27 people lost their lives, 156 shacks were set alight, and 25 vehicles were burn down.

The commemoration which is celebrated every year during this time seeks to educate young generations about the importance of knowing their history, while helping bring healing and closure to families who continue to mourn their loved ones lost during the violence.

Xolani Sabelo, chairman of Civil and Progressive Alliance organisation, said they saw the importance of celebrating this every year to show support.

While his NPO deputy, Ntombizonke Xulu, said majority of youth in the township were not aware about what happened in 1991.
