Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a narrow but important 1–0 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, 30 August 2025, at Athlone Stadium. The match was tightly contested, with both sides showing good organisation, but it was Sundowns who found the decisive breakthrough.
The turning point came in first-half injury time when Peter Shalulile calmly slotted home a penalty. That single strike not only secured three points for the champions but also carried huge personal significance. With it, the Namibian forward became the all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier Soccer League, surpassing Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing record. His 130th goal was celebrated with pride by teammates, supporters, and neutrals who witnessed history being made.
The second half saw Stellenbosch push forward in search of an equaliser, but Sundowns’ defence stayed firm. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams kept a clean sheet, ensuring Shalulile’s record-breaking moment also delivered a winning result.
The victory strengthened Sundowns’ position at the top of the log, while Shalulile’s achievement confirmed his place as one of Africa’s most consistent and deadly strikers.
