SAI20 SUMMIT: ELEVATING THE ROLE OF SUPREME AUDIT INSTITUTIONS IN DRIVING ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE GOVERNANCE

The Supreme Audit Institutions 20 (SAI20) summit, chaired this year by the Office of the Auditor-General of South Africa, opened with a powerful message about the evolving and indispensable role of audit institutions in shaping the public governance agenda. Speaking at the press conference, the South African Auditor-General emphasized the collective duty of SAIs to serve not only as watchdogs, but as strategic partners that add value to democratic societies.

The discussions at the summit centered around three key pillars: the institutional strengthening of SAIs, the importance of collaborative partnerships, and the responsibility of shaping regulatory and policy conversations with impact. The Auditor-General acknowledged the support and partnership of colleagues from other member countries, including Mr. Junior, underscoring the value of mutual learning and shared passion for public accountability.

“Our work must not be detached from the real pain and aspirations of our citizens,” said the AG. “We exist to add value—not only through audit reports, but by becoming a trusted neighbor and a valued partner in nation-building.”

The summit also explored how SAIs can influence national regulatory decisions, particularly in areas such as environmental sustainability, fiscal management, and public sector innovation. With mounting pressure on governments to deliver under constrained resources, the AG stressed the importance of repositioning audit outputs to be more responsive, solution-oriented, and impactful.

There was a strong call to optimize communication with both public and private sector stakeholders, to ensure that audit recommendations are not only understood, but acted upon. Conversations also touched on how to align audit work with national development priorities and global frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In conclusion, the SAI20 summit in South Africa reaffirmed the vital role of Supreme Audit Institutions in protecting public value, enhancing good governance, and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth.
