Julius Malema appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court today in a case that continues to follow him like a dark shadow. This court appearance was not for final sentencing, but for pre-sentencing arguments in his firearm case.

Malema was convicted in October 2025 for firing a rifle into the air at an EFF rally in 2018. The charges include unlawfully discharging a firearm in public and putting lives at risk. The incident, once defended as symbolic, is now treated as a serious criminal matter.

Inside court, Malema’s legal team presented reasons why he should not go to prison. A social worker testified, saying jail time would have a negative impact. Outside, thousands of EFF supporters gathered, dressed in red, singing and chanting, while tight security surrounded the court.

Despite the crowds and strong political presence, no sentence was handed down today. The court postponed the matter to 15 April 2026, when final arguments and sentencing are expected.

Legal experts warn that prison is a real possibility. If Malema receives a sentence longer than 12 months, he could lose his seat in Parliament , a blow that could change his political future forever.

Today’s appearance carried a heavy mood. The chants outside could not erase the reality inside the courtroom: the law is closing in, and the wait for judgment continues.
