LOCAL WINE PRODUCERS TAKE CENTER STAGE AT PROUDLY SA EXPOAs

South African winemakers navigate an increasingly volatile economic landscape, Proudly South African has announced the return of its highly anticipated Local Wine Expo. Taking place from Friday, 24 July to Sunday, 26 July 2026 at the Prison Break Market in Lonehill, Johannesburg, this year’s three-day showcase explicitly aims to champion local producers and fast-track industry transformation at a time when boutique and black-owned brands face unprecedented market pressures.

The South African wine sector—currently ranked as the eighth-largest producer globally—continues to grapple with intense operational bottlenecks. Small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and newly established black-owned wine labels are feeling the worst of the squeeze. Recent industry reports highlight that steep macroeconomic inflation, escalating regulatory logistics, and changing weather patterns impacting vineyard harvests have heavily compressed profit margins for independent vintners.

Coupled with the historic challenge of securing premium shelf space on local retail lines against massive, well-entrenched commercial estates, the barrier to market access remains high.
In response, the 2026 Proudly SA Local Wine Expo is positioning itself as more than just a lifestyle tasting event; it is acting as a critical economic lifeline. The expo will bring approximately 30 homegrown South African brands under one roof, offering boutique winemakers direct access to thousands of Gauteng consumers, corporate buyers, and procurement specialists.

”The Local Wine Expo provides a powerful counter-strategy to the headwinds facing our winemakers,” states Proudly SA. “By creating a direct, accessible portal for the public and bulk retailers to buy directly from the source, we keep the domestic value chain moving, stimulate local job retention, and actively push for the commercial representation these brilliant brands deserve.”

A standout feature of this year’s expo is its continued focus on industry transformation. Partnering with development frameworks and innovation hubs like The Wine Arc, the event provides a crucial launchpad for resilient black-owned labels and female entrepreneurs who are introducing diverse new flavor profiles and narratives to the local market.

Running daily from 24–26 July, the expo will cater to all levels of wine appreciation, featuring structured tastings, direct interactions with winemakers, and specialized business matchmaking seminars designed to link emerging suppliers directly with major retail conglomerates.
To encourage widespread consumer support, admission to the expo is free, though online registration is strictly required for entry. Organizers have urged all patrons to attend responsibly, encouraging the use of local e-hailing or designated chauffeur services.

More than a wine expo, the event creates valuable market access opportunities for Proudly South African members and celebrates an industry that contributes billions to the South African economy. Over the past three editions, 74% of participating wine brands have been black- and female-owned, highlighting the sector’s growing diversity and entrepreneurial success.

With local wine producers facing increasing pressure in export markets, the expo also shines a spotlight on the important role South Africans can play in supporting local businesses by choosing local.
