The Durban University of Technology (DUT) held a special Student Diversity Festival today at the Steve Biko Campus Sport Centre.
The event was organized by DUT’s Centre for General Education and focused on celebrating different cultures, ideas, and backgrounds within the university.
the festival welcomed international guest speakers who shared their thoughts and experiences.
Students and staff came together to enjoy performances, discussions, and cultural displays.
Dr Siyabonga Mdluli, an organiser spoke at the event and explained the goal of the festival.
“The aim is to celebrate diversity in all its forms and to foster inclusive and transformative learning spaces that prepare students to become adaptive, socially conscious graduates.”
Many students shared how the festival made them feel proud and more connected to others on campus.
“I loved seeing different cultures being celebrated. It made me feel like I belong,” said Zanele Khumalo, a student.
One of the highlights of the festival was a panel discussion titled “Unity in diversity or harmony in disguise? Interrogating the politics of celebrations.”
The panel explored the meaning behind the phrase “unity in diversity,” which is often used in multicultural events at South African universities.
Speakers talked about how this idea can be both powerful and complicated, especially when it comes to real-life student experiences.
The festival gave everyone a chance to think deeply about what it means to live and learn together in a diverse society.
It also reminded students and staff of the importance of creating spaces where all voices are heard and respected.
