It can be tricky to anticipate growth or predict the direction a business will take in the future.
For business owners like Oscar Maseme and his wife, Dolly, there are many factors to consider when evaluating the prospective survival and expansion of their football club:
The type of players they sign and, most importantly, the technical team and head coach who will be working closely with the players on a day-to-day basis.
Does the technical staff have the ability to take this team from the lower ranks up to the ABC Motsepe League and all the way to the Premier Soccer League?
The Baroka Football Club from Ga-Mphahlele in Limpopo did it a few years after it was established in 2007.
So nothing can stop 11-month-old Maseme FC from Odendaalsrus in Welkom from realising their dream of playing at the highest football level in the country.
The club is determined to relocate to Gauteng province as early as next month in order for them to achieve their goals.
Said Oscar:
“We are a family that loves football, and it pains me to see children roam around the streets doing absolutely nothing,” he said.
When Dolly was approached by her better half about the idea to start a soccer team, she was over the moon.
“It’s a pity that we don’t have such tournaments or sports facilities in our Lejweleputswa region, where talent can be nurtured. So because we love football, we are forced to go out of our province in search of opportunities for our children.”
Dolly also has a son who plays football, and along with other boys around her area, there is one dream—to make it to professional leagues and make their parents proud.
The Maseme FC won a whopping R50 000 from the Clinix Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge on Tuesday 23 December 2025.
The tournament formally known as the Discovery Tournament is played during the festive season at the Nike Stadium in Klipspruit Soweto.
Oscar added: “We are proud of ourselves as Maseme FC. We have been doing so well leading to the finals, winning with a big margin, but when we went to penalties against East Rand Athletic Club, I thought we were going to lose it. Maseme won 5-4 on penalties to snatch the Clinix Cup.
Oscar said running a team is far from easy.
It takes not only time and money to run a team, but you also need to have experience, knowledge, patience, and strategic planning.
He said no matter the size of the business, a soccer club having a team of people who can translate your goals into results can make all the difference.
