For some children, a new pair of school shoes may seem like a small gift. But for learners who come from struggling households, it can mean dignity, confidence and a reminder that someone cares.
This was the message behind the recent School Shoes Donation Drive hosted by Betty Lekgetho, founder of Masechaba Foundation of Hope, at Khulanolwazi Primary School in Braamfischerville, Soweto.
The event, held in the school hall on Tuesday, 12 August, turned an ordinary school day into a memorable one as disadvantaged learners received new school shoes.
The initiative was aimed at supporting learners from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those whose families struggle to make ends meet.
For some households, putting food on the table and paying for basic necessities comes before buying a new pair of school shoes. Many of the learners come from single-parent families, unemployed households or homes headed by grandparents who rely on social grants.
As a result, some learners had been attending school in old and worn-out shoes, while others wore sneakers simply because they had no other option.
The donation was therefore about much more than footwear.
It was about restoring dignity, building confidence and reminding young learners that their circumstances should never define who they can become.
Lekgetho said kindness does not have to come with a price tag.
“Kindness is free and gives hope to the next person,” she said.
Her words captured the spirit of the day – that a simple act of kindness can make a lasting difference in the life of a child.
The school welcomed the foundation’s intervention and expressed its appreciation for the support given to the learners.
Khulanolwazi Primary School head Alex Shivambu thanked Masechaba Foundation of Hope for its generosity and commitment to the wellbeing of the school’s learners.

“Your kindness and commitment to supporting the educational needs and well-being of our learners are deeply appreciated. The donation of school shoes will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the learners who received them, helping them to attend school with greater confidence, dignity and a sense of belonging,” Shivambu said.
He added that the contribution showed the positive impact that community partnerships can have in creating better opportunities for children.
The programme also included a motivational talk, encouraging learners to remain focused on their education and not allow the challenges they face at home or in their communities to stand in the way of their dreams.
Then came the moment many had been waiting for.
Selected learners were presented with their new school shoes.
The excitement on their faces told a story that words could hardly capture.
For these young learners, the shoes were not simply another item to take home. They represented hope. They represented dignity. They represented confidence.

Most importantly, they were a reminder that their community had not forgotten them.
The School Shoes Donation Drive once again showed the power of community organisations to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Through compassion and a willingness to give, Masechaba Foundation of Hope is sending a powerful message to learners: where you come from does not have to determine where you are going. Sometimes, hope can begin with something as simple as a new pair of school shoes.
