The streets of Orlando East came alive with vibrant energy, music, and the rich aromas of local culinary heritage as the highly anticipated Soweto Kota Picnic successfully took place on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at the sophisticated Le Phonic Lounge.
The event proved to be a massive success, drawing food enthusiasts, families, and community members from across the township to celebrate South Africa’s ultimate street food the iconic Kota.
From classic layers to innovative gourmet twists, local vendors showcased the incredible culinary creativity that defines Soweto.
The gathering was envisioned and brought to life by its dedicated founder, Mthokozisi Valentino. Affectionately known by the community as “Mthophonic” a moniker born from his deep admiration for the legendary DJ Euphonic and cleverly derived from his own name and his idol’s Valentino has long been a driving force in local entertainment and hospitality.

The event also marked a celebration of Valentino’s evolving entrepreneurial journey.
Having previously operated under the brand Enyameni.com, his vision was to pivot toward creating something uniquely sophisticated and entirely distinct from standard restaurant brands found globally.
As the community naturally began calling him “Le Phonic,” the concept for the upscale Le Phonic Lounge was born.
Today, Le Phonic stands proud as a homegrown restaurant that specifically deals with the beloved traditional meals enjoyed Ekasi, masterfully combined with European-style favorites such as burgers, wings, and a wide variety of other dishes.
Beyond the exceptional food and music, the core mission of the Soweto Kota Picnic is community empowerment and economic survival.
The initiative focuses heavily on skills development, job creation, and sustainable growth for local residents.
”We specifically work with creating jobs for the community,” explained founder Mthokozisi ‘Mthophonic’ Valentino. ” it’s a kota picnic, but it’s not limited. We are teaching the community because the economy is tough right now.
We are specifically working with abantu (the people). We are building a legacy.”

The picnic provided a phenomenal platform for local food businesses to connect with new customers.
Among the standout vendors was Buhlemelo Events, whose popular stall drew major crowds throughout the day.
Reflecting on the day’s success, a representative from Buhlemelo Events shared their excitement for the upcoming food season: “The response at the Soweto Kota Picnic was incredible. For everyone who loved our food or missed out, you can find us serving up your favorites at the upcoming Soweto Kota Festival happening this September, as well as the next Jozi Kota Festival where the official dates will be announced soon!”
In addition to the mouth watering food offerings, the event featured a stellar lineup of music and live entertainment, perfectly honoring the musical roots behind the venue’s name and turning Le Phonic Lounge into a hub of cultural celebration.
Following the overwhelming success of the June 6th edition, the organizers have expressed immense gratitude to the attendees, vendors, and partners who made the day unforgettable.
Plans are already underway for future events aimed at continuing the celebration of Soweto’s rich food culture in a premium setting that continues to put the community first.
