IT’S better late than never.
With Grade 12 learners preparing to write their final examinations, a donation of 1 000 scientific calculators has come at a crucial time for learners at Mandisa Shiceka School Specialising in Mathematics, Science and Technology.
The calculators were officially handed over to the school during a ceremony held at the school hall on Thursday, 10 September.
Speaking about the importance of education, Moteke encouraged learners not to give up on their studies.
“Education is still the key to success and that will not change. I know most learners feel like giving up, but I encourage everyone to focus and continue working hard. We break away from poverty through education, so that is the only solution and we still believe in that.
“I’m happy that Mobil Company responded positively. Most companies operate with a profit motive, but Mobil Company has shown character by demonstrating that they care about the education of black children in townships.”
The school hopes the donation will contribute towards improved academic performance and help learners achieve its ambitious target of a 100% pass rate.
The donation is expected to make a significant difference to Grade 12 learners, particularly those who previously struggled to access scientific calculators for Mathematics and Science.
For learners, having access to their own calculators means less time struggling with basic calculations and more time focusing on understanding their schoolwork. They will also be able to practise at home, giving them an opportunity to prepare more effectively for their final examinations.
The donation came after Mathematics and Science teacher Phoenix Moteke approached Mobil Company for assistance for learners who were struggling to access the necessary equipment.
His initiative has now borne fruit, with Grade 12 learners set to benefit from the scientific calculators as they prepare for their final examinations.
The scientific calculators will allow learners to practise more frequently and build confidence in Mathematics and Science, subjects that can present significant challenges for Grade 12 learners.
