One Joburg organisation Jicama89 hosted the official handover of BrailleNote Touch devices to learners at Sibonile School for the Visually Impaired. The event took place in the school hall last week.
This important initiative was made possible through a partnership committed to promoting inclusive education and empowering visually impaired learners through advanced technology. These are the partners Komatsu South Africa and Jicama89.
The purpose of the handover was to provide learners with access to advanced BrailleNote Touch technology, enabling them to study more independently and effectively.

These devices are designed to make learning easier, improve access to educational resources, and enhance academic performance. The initiative represents a significant step forward in expanding educational opportunities for visually impaired learners.
Speaking during the event, Jicama89 Director Shaneen Sila highlighted the importance of equipping learners with innovative educational tools.
“To all the learners receiving these devices, believe in your abilities and never let obstacles define your future,” she said.
“These BrailleNote Touch devices are tools to help you unlock your potential, pursue your dreams, and achieve great things. Continue working hard, stay curious, and remember that your determination and resilience are your greatest strengths.”
These devices are intended to empower learners by giving them greater independence both inside and outside the classroom. The advanced technology enables them to access educational materials more efficiently, complete schoolwork with confidence, and participate fully in their learning journey.
Reginald Tshabalala, manager for employee relations and transformation at Komatsu South Africa, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the development of visually impaired learners through the donation.
“This donation reflects Komatsu’s commitment to making a meaningful difference in the communities where we operate. As a business, we recognise that investing in inclusive education is key to building a more equitable and sustainable future. By providing BrailleNote Touch devices to learners at Sibonile School for the Visually Impaired, we are helping to ensure that no learner is left behind in an increasingly digital world.”
