WHENEVER Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns meet, there is no such thing as “we will take a draw and move on.” It is always about pride, the bragging rights and making sure you don’t give your rivals something to laugh about come Monday morning.
The Glamour Boys have started the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign like a team on a mission, and a victory would see them remain at the summit of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) league table with nine points from three games.
The Brazilians will be playing only their second league match of the season, and they will be desperate to collect maximum points. For Sundowns, this is not the time to start dropping points.
Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise knows exactly what awaits his team and believes the players will give everything on the field.
“Obviously, we’re playing a big game and we are ready as Mamelodi Sundowns to do our best,” he said. “Our supporters must expect us to give our all on the field of play. I promise them that we won’t disappoint as players. We need them as our 12th man to give us support and cheer us on,” said Mkhulise.
He knows it will not be an easy afternoon at all, especially with Chiefs flying high at the beginning of the current campaign.
“It’s going to be a very difficult game because they are doing well at the moment in the league. They are also top of the league.”
Sundowns will be looking to put pressure on the Soweto giants from the first minute of the game so to ensure that they don’t concede goals early in the game. They know that a strong start to the season can set the tone for the rest of the campaign, while a slow start can leave them chasing the pack when things get serious.
