MAPPING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT THROUGH LINEAGE OF BOOKS WRITTEN BY DR. PHEKO

Dr. Motsoko Pheko’s legacy as a Pan- Africanist, scholar, and activist is profoundly encapsulated through his extensive body of work and the recent archival exhibition at Unisa Main Campus Pretoria.

This event was organised by Unisa Libraries and Information Services in collaboration with Dr. Motsoko Pheko’s family, on 03 June.

The exhibition served as a tribute into Dr. Pheko’s commitment to social justice and his advocacy for the marginalised. It highlighted his contribution to various fields.

The campaign not only showcased his literary work but also served an interactive platform for the public to engage with his ideas and legacy.

Dr. Pheko’s passing on April 19, 2024, at the age of 93, marked the end of a significant chapter in South Africa’s history. However, his contributions continue to inspire.

The archival exhibition at Unisa is a testimony of his enduring impact, ensuring that future generations can access and learn from his work.

As Acting Chair of Department of Art and Music Dr. Daniel Masoko at Unisa said, “The book exhibition is one major way to encourage Youth to be authors and be part of the reading community.

This exhibition serves as an important resource for youth and inspiring both emerging authors and established by showcasing the life and work of a distinguished public figure like Dr. Pheko.

It raises awareness about his contribution, the engagements he was part of, and the depth of his thoughts.

Behind his journey and accomplishments, the campaign not only celebrates his legacy but also inspires young people to pursue knowledge, write purposefully, and recognise the power of their own voice.

His work encourages the next generation to follow in his footsteps, using the written word to reflect, critique, and build society.”

Dr. Pheko’s work highlighted his identity not only as a leader in politics and law but also as a visionary deeply rooted in his heritage. His legacy, now preserved through digitalisation, serves as a lasting inspiration for future generations.

As a manager for Administration and Support Services at Unisa Libraries and Information Services, Rebecca Senyolo said to the community of writers, especially black writers, their voice matters.

“Let writing become a bridge between generations of repository of wisdom and sources of pride.”
