CHIEFS MUST FIX DEFENSIVE MISTAKES NOW

By KOPANO MONAHENG

Kaizer Chiefs defender Dillon Solomons says the team needed to do better to ensure that they don’t concede easy goals early in the season, which might come back to haunt them at the end of the season.

Though the Phefeni Boys are winning their matches and have never lost a game so far this season, it was important that they do their homework now before it was too late.

Solomons, like any other member of the team, was not impressed with how they handled the game between them and Siwelele FC in the freezing cold last Sunday. Kaizer Chiefs won the match 3-2.

On the win over Siwelele FC, Solomons said:

“I think getting the result was positive for us, but obviously, the way the game went, we weren’t really happy with it. Obviously, we take the result, we take the three points because that’s the most important. But we want to be better than what we showed in that game,” said Solomons.

Their aim is to be better defensively and limit their mistakes at the back. That’s what they will try to control this afternoon when they play Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.

“But going forward, I think we did really well, looking at the circumstances that we had. Having three not-so-tall boys in front, but obviously keeping the ball and making the defenders run. So, that was a tactic, and it played off really well. We need to improve on a lot of things, but that comes with time.”

Chiefs have drawn just two games this season, winning three, while their opponents have played the same number of games. Both teams have a lot to improve on going forward.

City have lost just once, drawn three times and have a single win. They have six points, while Chiefs have 11 from the same number of games.

Solomons said:

“Yeah, we know it’s not going to be an easy game, going to Polokwane and facing a very tough Polokwane City side. But we know what we need to do, and I think we’re working well this week.”

Since coming back from an injury, he believes that he’s doing extremely well to help the team secure maximum points and play the good, entertaining football that fans expect from them.

“No, I think I’m doing good. Looking after the body really well. Obviously, taking the time out to make sure every part of the body is in good shape and dealing with the recovery processes really well.

“So, yeah, I’m looking forward to the season. Hopefully, I can keep that going. Obviously, you want to keep the body in good shape for as long as possible, but there are a lot of things you can’t control. The things you can control, you have to do really well. So, the body’s feeling in good shape, and hopefully I can continue to go on.”

So far, so good for Amakhosi this season. They have been a marvellous team to watch, and their position at the top of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) means a lot to them.

“Yeah, I think last season we were in a similar position to this. Maybe with the first five games, we were really good. We were also unbeaten, and then after the break, that’s when things went a little bit sideways for us.

“So, for me, this good start is really good. It’s positive for us. But now it’s for us to come back from the break that we’re going to have, which is going to be a long one, and try and keep that consistency.”

Solomons believes that it’s those types of little things that they need to focus on this season that will ensure that they are successful in everything that they do.

“So, yeah, the good start is positive for us. We know how it feels, we know how that looks, but it’s obviously coming back from those breaks where we need to improve our consistency.”

Obviously, they watch every single game when it comes to the other two big teams, but for them, it’s just about staying close and doing what they need to do.

“You know, obviously, we want to achieve great things with the club, and that’s how we’re going to do it. We can’t be focusing on what other teams are doing.

“Yes, we’re all going to have a tight schedule coming close to the end of the year, but for us, it’s just staying the course, knowing what we need to do and focusing on what we can control, and that’s our games.

“Whatever they do on the side, they do. You know, we’re just here to focus on ourselves and focus on our team.”
