Women from across Soweto came together at Teng Lifestyle in Naledi on Saturday, 8 August 2026, for a special Women’s Month empowerment and wellness event hosted by Soweto Finalists 2026, Zandile Nxumalo.
The event was held under the theme “Restore to Rise” and brought together young women and mothers to talk, share their experiences and support one another.
The gathering created a safe space where women could speak openly about the challenges they face at home, in their communities and at work.
As part of Women’s Month, the event also remembered the brave women who stood up for their rights. This year marks 70 years since thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956 to protest against discriminatory pass laws.
Nxumalo said the event was about reminding women of their strength and encouraging them to take back their identity despite the challenges they face.

“Choose courage over fear, and healing over hurt. You have the power and capacity to redefine your identity and use it again,” she said.
The programme featured speakers who shared their personal stories, challenges and journeys. Their stories reminded women that difficult situations do not have to decide how their future will look.
The discussions also focused on the importance of women supporting each other, standing up for their rights, asking for professional help when needed and working together to build stronger communities.
One of the participants, Kelebogile Mokoena, said she found the event meaningful.
“Very fulfilling, informative and grounding, especially as women and mothers, seeing another woman do this so open-heartedly,” she said.
Wellness Takes Centre Stage
Health and wellness were also a big part of the day.
Women were encouraged to take their physical and mental health seriously. They were also reminded that asking for help is not a weakness.
The discussions touched on mental health challenges and encouraged women going through difficult times to seek help and make use of support groups where they can talk freely in a safe environment.

Senzekile Dlomo said the gathering showed what can happen when women come together with one purpose.
“It was very heart-warming, empowering and motivating. I’m really glad I came,” she said.
A Call for Women to Rise Together
Through the “Restore to Rise” theme, Nxumalo wanted to do more than celebrate Women’s Month. She wanted to recognise the important role women play in their families and communities.
The message was simple: when women support, encourage and empower each other, they can turn difficult situations into opportunities to grow and rebuild.

As Women’s Month continues, the event reminded those in attendance that the legacy of South African women is not only about remembering the struggles of the past. It is also about building confident, healthy and empowered women for the future.
The day ended on a positive note, with participants taking part in yoga and other exercises aimed at helping them relax, release tension and reconnect with their bodies.
